PROJECT DESCRIPTION
NorthStar Foundation primarily serves boys from families living in poverty. The program focuses on five core fields: academics, athletics, arts, outdoor and experiential learning, and employment readiness. To assist in meeting their goals, this after-school center for boys features a 14,000-square-foot gym, a climbing wall, a technology classroom, and spaces for study and offices. The facility is distinct from other athletic centers in its focus on education.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

• The HVAC system comprises multiple 4- to 6-ton, single-zone, 2-stage, high-efficiency air-cooled rooftop units with an integral direct digital control board.
• The plumbing system utilizes domestic water supplied from the city water service.
• Occupancy sensing control for lighting was used throughout most of the facility.
• The gymnasium is illuminated by high-output fluorescent light fixtures. Lights can be switched into several modes to accommodate various needs of the space.
• The facility was provided with an intelligent, microprocessor-based, addressable fire alarm that reports the status of each fire alarm device.
• The fire protection system includes sprinklers throughout the building, designed for light hazard areas.
• Access control is provided at the four primary exterior door locations.
• IP-based surveillance cameras, powered over Ethernet, were installed in multiple locations.
• All outlets, pathways, cable jacks, and horizontal cabling were provided for data communications.
